Susan Brubaker Knapp is a well‑known American fiber artist, art quilter, author, teacher, and longtime host of Quilting Arts TV. She’s widely recognized for her vivid, realistic textile work and her mastery of techniques like wholecloth painting, fusible appliqué, and thread sketching. Susan’s program will be on Wholecloth Painting Quilts. She will describe a technique where you paint a design on white fabric and then quilt it. She will discuss materials used and processes, share tips and tricks, and show several works in progress and completed. The program will include a digital slide show and trunk show.
Following the program, Susan will present two separate workshops - a 1/2 day workshop on Tuesday and a full day workshop on Wednesday.
Improvisational Raw-Edge Collage (Tuesday 12-4pm Our Saviour Lutheran Church) Susan’s half-day workshop is an improvisational raw-edge collage class. You’ll work from photos of real flowers, create drawings based on simplified abstractions of them, and then cut out pieces without patterns. You’ll arrange the pieces and tack them down on the background with diluted school glue. You will work from one of her flower photos or work from your own photos. If you choose to use one of your own, you will need to email it to her at least one week in advance to make sure it will work with her technique. Her email is: susan@susanbrubakerknapp.com.

Workshop Fee: $25 for members, $35 for guests*
Wholecloth Painting Botanicals (Wednesday 9am - 3pm Our Saviour Lutheran Church) In the full day workshop on Wednesday, Susan will teach the basics of painting on fabric to make wholecloth painted quilts. You’ll choose from one of her designs and use acrylic textile paints to create at least one small piece. Do not worry if you’ve never painted anything before…this may look complicated, but it isn’t once you learn a bit.
If you have photos you’d like to paint on fabric after this workshop, please bring them with you. She will talk with you about which ones would work best, and why.
