GUILD HISTORY
On September 8, 1982, a group of women from the Sandhills, interested in quilting, met at Campbell House to share ideas and projects. On November 10, 1982, the group organized officially as “Sandhill Quilters Guild”. Dues were set at $6.00.
In 1983-84, the guild was asked to create a banner for the Moore County Centennial Celebration. A Guild Banner was created as well. A Constitution and By-laws were adopted in 1985-86. The guild also participated in Autumn Fest in Southern Pines, entertaining about 100 visitors with a display of approximately 50 quilts (the first Quilt Show) in the old First Baptist Church sanctuary.
Between 1987 and 2000, creation of a donation quilt became an annual event, the guild acquired tax-exempt status, the guild pin was first available, and the name of the guild was changed to the Sandhills Quilters Guild.
In 2006-2008, the guild began providing grants to local schools so that teachers might choose to use quilting as a part of the teaching program in elementary and middle school programs. They also began a program to support the local Girl Scout community. This is in addition to a long-standing program to provide "Comfort Quilts" to local nursing homes and the Sandhills Children's Center.
The guild participated in the Malcom Blue Festival quilt show and boutique in the years 1996-99, then in 2004, they held their first quilt show at the Pinehurst Fair Barn. Quilt shows are held in the fall, in even numbered years.
